ABOUT US

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, popularly known as CIMAP, is a frontier plant research laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Established originally as Central Indian Medicinal Plants Organisation (CIMPO) in 1959, CIMAP is steering multidisciplinary high quality research in biological and chemical sciences and extending technologies and services to the farmers and entrepreneurs of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) with its research headquarter at Lucknow and Research Centres at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pantnagar and Purara. CIMAP Research Centres are aptly situated in different agro-climatic zones of the country to facilitate multi-location field trials and research. A little more than 50 years since its inception, today, CIMAP has extended its wings overseas with scientific collaboration agreements with Malaysia.....  readmorebutton

The focus of the department is management of "Genetic Resources" of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs). The germplasm of MAPs is being effectively conserved in seed bank for mid- term storage (at 4ºC ± 1ºC for 15-20 years ) and short term storage (at 18 ºC ± 1 ºC for 5-8 years). The live plants are also conserved in the respective field conservatories namely AYUSH (Traditional system of medicine), UPAJ (Under cultivation), AMRIT (Leads been obtained by CIMAP), FASAL (Released varieties of CIMAP), SRISHTI (Shrubby MAPs), TARUVAR (Tree species of MAPs), MANAV (MAPs depicted in form of their uses in curing the ailments of different body parts of human), PHAL VAN (MAPs mainly used as fruits) and ANKUR (MAPs used for growing new introductions). Our research focus is also on fine characterization of germplasm of medicinal and aromatic plants. The DNA fingerprinting laboratory at our department is dedicated for molecular characterization of germplasm, development of fingerprints of Withania somnifera, Catharanthus roseus and Papaver germplasms by deploying various molecular markers techniques. A large microsatellite marker resource is being generated at the department specifically for Catharanthus roseus and Withania somnifera. Seed quality laboratory of our department is also working on development of seed standards for quality parameters and protocols for seed quality testing of commercially cultivated major medicinal and aromatic crops. Genetic improvement work of Artemisia annua, Sylibum marianam, Mentha species, Withania somnifera, Catharanthus roseus, Papaver somniferum, Vetiveria zizinoides and Rosa damacena is also being carried out by the department.

With the establishment of the Division of Genetics and Plant Breeding in 1978 systematic efforts were initiated on genetic improvement of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) as its core mandate activity. In fulfilling the core mandate and aspired objectives, significant strides have been made in the development of improved varieties in all the major Medicinal and Aromatic plants (150 improved varieties in 48 MAPs species) and elucidation of genetic and cytogenetic principles for better understanding of the genetics of target plants leading to publication of over 400 research publications. The focus of the current scientific activities is centred along the following lines of investigation: Application of recombination, Cloline, Mutation, polyploidy and Molecular Approaches for Qualitative and Quantitative Breeding of MAPs. Utilization of Biometrical, Population and Association Genetics to realize Genetic Improvement of MAPs. General and Molecular Cytogenetics, DNA marker resources and Molecular phylogenetics.
