ABOUT US

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, popularly known as CIMAP, is a frontier plant research laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Established originally as Central Indian Medicinal Plants Organisation (CIMPO) in 1959, CIMAP is steering multidisciplinary high quality research in biological and chemical sciences and extending technologies and services to the farmers and entrepreneurs of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) with its research headquarter at Lucknow and Research Centres at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pantnagar and Purara. CIMAP Research Centres are aptly situated in different agro-climatic zones of the country to facilitate multi-location field trials and research. Significant Achievements

(i) Bioactivity guided extraction and isolation of marker phytochemicals-

Employing modern chromatographic techniques, viz.: CC, TLC, Flash, and HPLC, etc. Some of the notable achievements are-

• Anti-cancer (Arjunic acid)

•Hepatoprotectives (Phyllanthus lignans)

•Immunomodulators (Lupeol, ursolic acid)

•Anti-psychotic (Indole alkaloids), /span>

•Anti-filarial (Diarylheptanoids);

•Anti-ageing (Iridoids);

•Anti-inflammatory (Erandone)

•Anti-tubercular (Diterpenoids, curcuminoids),

•Anti-inflammatory (Erandone)

•Anti-malarial (Phloridzin, phloretin, taraxasterol derivatives,)

 

 (ii)Standardization of Raw herbs and their derived products

• Development of chemical fingerprinting and analytical/ noninvasive techniques of phytomolecules by     HPTLC, HPLC-PDA, HPLC-MS and HPLC-MS-MS, GC, GC-MS, NIR, etc. More than 40 standard operating     procedures (SOPs) for medicinal plants used in traditional system of medicine e.g. Withania, Arjuna,         Brahmi, Andrographis, Catharanthus,Senna, Rasana, Rauwolfia etc. were developed.

 • Defined the Chemotype of plant varieties developed at CIMAP (medicinal plants-26/ Aromatic crop-23)       e.g. Withania somnifera, A. annua, Silybum marianum, etc

 • More than 25 New Chemical Entities (NCEs) as marker chemicals for quality assurance of medicinal       plants

 • Developed more than 125 Botanical Reference substance (BRSCIMAP) for quick authentication of raw      and powdered herbs.

 • Defined Standards for Indian Pharmacopeia -Terminalia arjuna & Artemisia annua and Artemisinin ;

 • Developed SOPs for quality assurance of CIMAP herbal products.
